A less arbitrary abstraction

My collages are sketches for paintings. In the Magazine Ricochet series, I follow a simple formula: selecting areas of colour while eliminating all images and text, except for the binary digits 1 and 0.

I mine art and design magazines, advertising, and popular culture for a rigorous form of abstraction, recycling their contents and stripping away image and clamour. Declining analogue media is destroyed and repurposed to reflect the dominance of digital media—and the fragility of its content.

The work is both an aesthetic response to the digital age and an attempt to bring it into the most analogue form of communication: the tradition of painting.
